The History of Casino Games

Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, Slot Machines – all the games you’ll see in any brick and mortar casino, as well as online ones such as Betfair Casino. These casinos have a long history and years of refinement that have helped to give you the best games possible for you to play.

Take for example, blackjack. One of the most popular casino games on the planet, has its first historical mention in a short story by Miguel Cervantes, where two young con artists are playing a game called Vingt-et-un, which is Spanish for 21!

Blackjack was hardly the only game of its type though; there were several games active in Europe at the time with the same basic goal of reaching a set number. Some of the more popular ones were Sette e Mezo or ‘Seven and a Half’, Treintiuna or ‘31’ and Quinze or ‘14’, all of which were about getting a hand as close to that number as possible.

It’s very likely that a lot of the rules from these games became assimilated into blackjack as it developed but you might wonder why it’s not called 21 as often now. This is all down to a special bet offered in certain gambling houses in America early in the country’s history – if a hand contained both the Ace of Spades and the Jack of Spades or Clubs, they’d get 10:1 back of their initial bet.

This didn’t last very long, but the name stuck and became synonymous with the game. Blackjack isn’t the only one though, as the infographic from Betfair casino below shows other games have taken to get to where they are today!

You won’t be surprised to find that the game of blackjack is one of the most popular at the casinos in Las Vegas and along the Strip.
